Sourcing Window 2027: The Trade Show and Order Calendar AI Toy Buyers Should Work Backwards From
Most buyers treat the trade show calendar as a travel plan. The good ones treat it as a manufacturing schedule.
Here is the uncomfortable arithmetic. A custom AI plush toy needs roughly 90 to 120 days from approved concept to a certified, shelf-ready container: 12 to 18 days for tooling and first sample, 10 to 20 days to lock firmware and voice content, 15 to 25 days of mass production, 10 to 20 days for EMC, safety and battery testing, and then 14 to 21 days on the water. Certification is not a formality you bolt on at the end; it runs in parallel with production and it is the stage that most often slips.
Which means: the show where you discover a product is not the show where you can still order it. If you want AI plush on shelves for holiday 2027, your sourcing decision lands somewhere in the first half of 2027, and the trade shows below are the forcing function that gets you there.
This guide maps the confirmed 2027 dates, then works backwards to what each one actually commits you to.
The 2027 Show Calendar, Confirmed Dates
The following dates are the 2027 industry calendar as published by the organisers. They are listed in the order they arrive, which is the order they matter to a sourcing plan.
| Show | 2027 Dates | City | What It Is For | |---|---|---|---| | CES | January 6-9 | Las Vegas, US | Consumer electronics. Where AI companion toys get their silicon narrative. | | Hong Kong Toys & Games Fair | January 11-14 | Hong Kong | The largest toy sourcing show in Asia. Your best factory-meeting window. | | London Toy Fair | January 19-21 | London, UK | UK and EU retail buyers. Strong on compliance expectations. | | Spielwarenmesse | February 2-6 | Nuremberg, Germany | The world's leading pure B2B toy fair. Trend-setting and category-defining. | | Spring Fair | February 7-10 | Birmingham, UK | UK general merchandise and gift channel. | | Toy Fair New York | February 20-23 | New York, US | The largest trade-only toy event in the Western Hemisphere. | | Tokyo International Gift Show | February 24-26 | Tokyo, Japan | The gate into Japanese retail, which has its own safety regime. | | Canton Fair (Spring) | April (Spring session) | Guangzhou, China | Broad China manufacturing. Held each spring and autumn since 1957. |
A note on Canton Fair: the fair runs in a spring and an autumn session every year, and the spring session traditionally spans April 15 to May 5 across three phases. Its exact 2027 phase dates are confirmed by the China Foreign Trade Centre closer to the event, so verify them against the official Canton Fair schedule before you book anything around them. The same discipline applies to every date on this list: confirm with the organiser.
Two shows deserve a caveat. Spielwarenmesse 2027 has already published its trend themes - "Beyond Limits" and "License to Play" - which tells you the industry's 2027 conversation is heading toward accessibility-driven design and licensed, cross-generational fandom. If your product line has no answer to either, the show will make that obvious, and it is better to know it in February than in August.
Working Backwards From a Shelf Date
A show date is only useful once it is inverted into a commitment deadline. Take holiday 2027, the hardest deadline most buyers face.
- Retail floor date: late October 2027, for Black Friday and the holiday window.
- Ocean cut-off: sea freight is 14 to 21 days, plus 3 to 7 days customs and 3 to 7 days inbound receiving. Your container must sail by early September 2027 to be safe.
- Production must finish: late August 2027.
- Certification must be cleared: mid to late August 2027. EMC, EN71 and battery testing take 10 to 20 days and cannot be compressed by paying more - the labs are the labs.
- Tooling and samples must be approved: by late April to early May 2027.
- Concept and supplier must be locked: February to March 2027.
Read that last line again and the calendar reorganises itself. The show that matters for holiday 2027 is not the autumn show. It is Hong Kong, London, Nuremberg and New York in the first quarter. If you arrive at Canton Fair in April still choosing a supplier, you are choosing at the exact moment you should already be approving tooling.
What Each Show Actually Commits You To
Not every show carries the same decision weight. Sorting them by what you should walk out with:
Hong Kong Toys & Games Fair (January 11-14). This is the working show. You are there to sit across a table from factory engineers, hold a sample in your hand, and get a straight answer on tooling cost, MOQ and certification scope. For an AI plush programme, this is where the real shortlist gets built. Bring a spec sheet, not a mood board.
Spielwarenmesse (February 2-6). This is the strategic show. Nuremberg is where category direction and European compliance expectations are set. It is also the best place to pressure-test your compliance story, because EN71 and the EU's evolving battery and repairability rules are front-of-mind for every European buyer you will meet there.
Toy Fair New York (February 20-23). This is the retail show. The Western Hemisphere's largest trade-only toy event is where you learn what US buyers are actually going to stock. It is the right venue for validating price point and package architecture before you commit tooling money.
London Toy Fair (January 19-21) and Spring Fair (February 7-10). The UK channel. Useful for a second read on European retail expectations and a fast sanity check on whether your product survives a general-merchandise shelf rather than a specialist toy aisle.
CES (January 6-9). Not a toy show, and you should not source there. But it sets the technology narrative that will be attached to your product for the next twelve months. Worth a day, for the language alone.
Canton Fair (April). The broad China manufacturing show, in three phases covering many categories. It is excellent for packaging, accessories and adjacent components around an AI toy programme. It is a poor venue for a first conversation about a custom AI plush, because the deep technical conversations you need do not fit the booth rhythm.
The Compliance Clock Runs on Its Own Schedule
One more reason the calendar is tighter than the freight math suggests: in AI toys, certification is the long pole, not production.
An AI plush is not one product. It is a plush shell, an electronics module, a voice engine, a firmware stack, a battery assembly and a certification dossier - and the dossier has to line up across borders. A single programme can need CE and EN71 for Europe, FCC for the United States, ASTM F963, CPC and, where a button battery is involved, Reese's Law-compliant construction and warning. The EU's right-to-repair direction is now a live design constraint for anything with a sealed battery, which means battery architecture is a decision you make at concept stage, not at certification stage.
Every one of those tests is sequential in practice, even when it is scheduled in parallel. A show in February that reveals your battery cannot be made serviceable without retooling has just cost you a holiday season. This is the argument for bringing a compliance-ready brief to your first 2027 meeting rather than a concept: age band, battery strategy, connectivity model, and target markets.
The Q1-Q4 2027 Order Calendar
Compressed into one working sequence:
- Q1 (January-March). Hong Kong, London, Nuremberg, New York. Meet suppliers, validate category direction, shortlist two to three factories, agree indicative tooling cost, MOQ and certification scope.
- Q2 (April-June). Place the tooling order. Approve the first sample. Lock the battery and connectivity architecture. Begin pre-compliance testing on the electronics module while the plush shell is still being finalised. Canton Fair in April is for packaging and adjacent components.
- Q3 (July-September). Mass production, formal certification, and the ocean cut-off for holiday. This quarter has no slack in it.
- Q4 (October-December). Retail sell-through, sell-through data, and the 2028 planning cycle. Q4 is also when you place spring and Easter programmes, because those order windows closed in the previous Q4.
The pattern to notice is that Q3 is where the calendar forgives nothing. Every show in Q1 and Q2 exists to protect Q3. A buyer who uses the 2027 show season purely to look at product, and who has not converted that into an approved sample by June, will spend Q4 explaining an empty shelf.
What To Bring To A 2027 Show
If you are sourcing AI toys rather than traditional plush, a standard buyer's kit is not enough. Bring:
- Age band and target market, which determine your entire test matrix.
- A battery strategy - sealed or serviceable, and how it survives the repairability direction.
- Connectivity model - WiFi, Bluetooth or offline, since this decides FCC scope and your data obligations.
- A price point and a BOM ceiling, because at $29.99 retail the electronics budget is fixed and unforgiving.
- Two or three concrete questions about firmware and OTA, which is where white-label AI toys actually fail after launch.
The factories that can answer those five things in the first meeting are the ones worth a second meeting. The ones that pivot to price are the ones that will still be pivoting in July.
Why This Calendar Favours Buyers Who Commit Early
AI plush is a young category with a short factory list. The plants that can genuinely do a plush shell plus an electronics module plus a certification dossier are not numerous, and their Q2 and Q3 capacity fills first - not with the largest orders, but with the earliest confirmed ones. A tooling slot booked in March is the same slot that is unavailable in May.
The 2027 calendar is not crowded. It is front-loaded. Four shows land in eight weeks between January 11 and February 23, and the decisions you make in those eight weeks determine whether you have a holiday programme or a holiday excuse.
Pick the shows, bring the brief, and work backwards from the shelf date rather than forwards from the show date.
